Step 0 - Disconnect the Power!
There are all kinds of live contacts inside the dryer cabinet. To avoid serious injury or death and possible damage to your unit, disconnect the power cord to your dryer.

Step 1 - Pop The Top and Secure From Above
To pop the top, you will need to use a stiff putty knife or flat head screw driver to pop up the top, as shown below. If you press in at the spring clips with a putty knife as shown below, the top will easily lift up. You can also use a screw driver and pry until the top pops free, but I would recommend a putty knife. If you have a a different model than the one featured here, you know that the top pops off if there are two brackets (see a pic of these brackets here) in the back of the dryer that allow the top to swing up. Most dryers of all models have a top that may be popped. Once the front of the top is "popped" up, you may swing the top upward as shown below. Then, I recommend securing the top from above as shown below to avoid having the top fall and damage wiring - you really really don't want to damage or pull out any of the wires connecting controls to the dryer!

Step 2 - Remove two front bolts to allow front to be taken off.
In the two photos shown below, the two bolts are removed near the top of the front. Once removed, you should now be able to lift and remove the front panel. You will need to disconnect a few wires - make sure to either label them or take a photo. I was glad I had a photo!

Step 3 - Remove the bulkhead.
You will see 4 bolts, as pictured below that fasten the bulkhead to the remaining dryer. Removal of the bolts allows you to remove the bulkhead. You need to lift it a little as you pull it away. There are two wires that need to be disconnected and also a wire clip needs to be disconnected.

Step 4 - Lift the drum out.
To do this, you simply lift - no tools needed. Once you complete this step, all internal parts are readily accessible. A lot easier than you thought, wasn't it! Once you have the drum out, you should use this opportunity to clean up all dust and inspect parts like the belt, idler pulley, front and back felt rings and the roller wheels that the dryer sits on.

Step 5 - Make your repairs and then do Steps 1-4 in reverse order to reassemble.
In the case of this dryer, I had to replace the idler pulley and belt. The idler pulley, available at http://www.appliancepartspros.com, could be replaced easily from the front access. And I simply slipped the belt over the drum in the worn area on the drum where I could see the previous belt was and then placed the drum back onto the two back rollers it sits on. To get the belt over the idler pulley and motor drive I removed a circular punch-out access panel that the dryer presumably had for such purpose, as shown below. But, with just this small hole and my big hand and wrist filling the hole, I could not see what I was doing, so I cut the access panel a little bigger to allow more space and light to put the belt on. I simpy fastened a painted repair panel over the access panel hole with sheet metal screws to make things look "right" again. In the bottom right photo, the correct orientation of the dryer belt on the new idler pulley is shown.
